Until the advent of computers cryptography was in the “more art than science” era. Computers have ushered in the “mathematical complexity” era. The third era is now knocking: modern memory technology allows for virtually unlimited quantities of randomness to offer security hinged on sound combinatorics which offers a highly credible appraisal of the vulnerability of any data event. Computers suppressed the artistic inventiveness of classic cryptography, and randomness suppresses the mathematical elegance of algorithmic complexity. It is not a smooth transition. So many renowned cryptographers are closet mathematicians casting themselves as cyber security professionals, and they will deny the march of history, ignore the new crop of ciphers that offers credibly appraised security by manipulating large amounts of randomness using basic bit-wise primitives that cannot be undermined by a smarter mathematical mind, and for which brute force is the only feasible attack, if any. As cryptography increasingly becomes a staple of the modern civil order, it is reassuring to know that the security it provides is not subject to abuse by a mysterious powerful mathematician somewhere. The era of randomness security will level the playing field, and shape our future in ways not yet clear. Some will discern this paradigm shift early and become its heralding pioneers.
